Importance of colour within trends

Colour is a vital part of the trends market and it is especially important for trend spotters to recognise the correct colours in order to promote new trends.

'Pantone' colours are used within the surface design environment whereby every possible colour is listed and has its own individual number. Trend spotters can then suggest individual numbers or similar shades of colour for a certain upcoming trend.

Trends

Every year, the fashion, interiors and gift markets have varying trends throughout different types of the year. We have spring/summer and autumn/winter. Different values change throughout these months. For example, within the area of fashion, materials may change for example, wools during winter and silks or linens in summer. Within interiors, warmer and colour colours may be used depending whether it is autumn or winter. In terms of gift, different themes may be marked throughout gift such as Mothers Day or Valentines Day etc. These values always change bringing new interesting and distinct designs. Trend spotters are always looking in advance for new trends for ears in advance, keeping in touch with designers giving them ideas of new colours and styles to use.

COLOUR!

So far within my research for my blog, I have realised that colour is absolutely crucial within design, so I thought I would do some further research into colour for myself for future reference!

We have three primary colours and if they are mixed together we get secondary colours. If secondary colours are mixed with primary colours we get intermediate (tertiary) colours. This is the basic colour wheel, however, colours can be of different shades if white or black is added.

We also have warm and cool colours, e.g. reds and oranges are warm colours and blues and purples are cooler colours, this may be considered when seasons change within fashion and interiors etc.

British Craft Trade Fair- DERYN RELPH

Deryn Relph's work which I saw on the British Craft Trade Fair website really appealed to me. I loved the use of bold contrasting colours which bring happiness to you when you look at them. The use of very simplistic patterns such as contrasting linear and circular shapes help to make the eye focus more upon contrasting colour used within the work.

I absolutely love this chair from Deryn Relph's collection. The way in which the cushions contrast with the base of the chair and how the colour wheel has been carefully experimented has really inspired me.

Inspirational blog

I came across the following blog which contains various forms of print pattern in various different ways, especially within the area of gift. I live the simplistic designs which are concentrated upon. I love the way in which shapes are used to create the ideas of animals or florals. The colour exploration throughout the blog is quite breath-taking.

Paperchase

When I realised we were focusing upon gift, the first thing which popped into my head was Paperchase! I love the shop Paperchase, it really appeals to me. I love how detailed designs of many different styles are developed into notepads, pens and wrapping paper etc. I always get lost within the shop when I visit!

Gift video

I have found this video on YouTube which demonstrates a new clock range which is very modern and experiments with block colour and block shapes. I quite like how unusual and qwerky the designs are!

Designed and Made

The Designed and Made website really appealed to me as I loved the almost 'cute' approach to the gifts which are available to purchase.

These four images have all been found on the Designed and Made website. I love this nature approach and how most of the gifts use very subtle colour and add quite a homely approach to the gifts. Although the designs are quite simplistic, they are all quite unique in terms of how they have been constructed and the ideas behind them. I particularly like the bird hanging and cushion because the printed design really appeals to me as an individual. I also love the use of colour within these designs.

I found this website to be very inspirational within the gift area. I loved the way in which the designs were very qwerky and quite modern representing modern day life. A lot of the gifts were quite humorous and almost a feel good factor.

I quite like this qwerky collection, however, I am more focused on the printed surface of something as opposed to a whole product.

Although in various situations, it is very much focused on the design of a product such as the print or pattern, sometimes it is also about the actual product. Designer makers produce designs for certain products, however, they also go onto making the products too.

Journal research Fashion

The attached below are photocopies from the journal 'View' Issue 104. I photocopied these images because the fashion garments really appealed to me in terms of colour and intricate designs. The prints and colour used are also very pleasing on the eye and the embroidered and embellished fabrics help to maintain the top end designer fashion garments.

Catwalk video

I thought that I would look on YouTube for an inspirational catwalk video, and I found a Vogue catwalk showing fashion with inspiration from Africa. I was quite overwhelmed by the intricate detailing which appeared on these dresses. Each dress looks like it has taken years to make as the attention to detail is exquisite.

London Fashion Week

Recently I have became very obsessed with the London Fashion Week website!

The website has really inspired me as an individual as I can see how print and fabric manipulation are used in different ways to create different effects. I have also learnt that colour is a vital part of fashion processes.

Hussein Chalayan

Hussein Chalayan has a very unique style to his work and instantly implies very top designer fashion from the first look of every garment. Although I do not particularly like the style, I think the unique prints and manipulation of fabric were good to research as the cuts and manipulation are quite inspirational.

The dress below is focused more on manipulation of fabric whereby an almost waterfall like impression has been made as the black fabric is manipulated in such a way that the fabric almost falls like water, yet gives the impression of rocks by a waterfall.

 This print to the left creates an almost rustic impression as harsh linear patterns have been created, as well as very dark and rustic colours. This set is very much focused on the print as opposed to the cut of the fabric.

Gharani Strok

Gharani Strok fashion collections are very much based upon print and exploring colour, yet also focus on the cut of fabric and how they look as a garment considering the woman's figure.

This summer floral dress really stood out to me as I really liked the print. I loved the subtle colours which floe into one and other to create a very flowing pattern which works alongside the flowing dress. The pink and yellow colours appeal to the summer collection too.

Another dress from Gharani Strok is this turquoise floral printed summer dress. Again, the subtle prints work well against the soft turquoise colour to create flowing designs which help to produce the soft flowing lines of the dress.

Eley Kishimoto

The image to the left shows a fashion dress by Eley Kishimoto a top designer who creates very bold prints and experiments colour in great detail. The work produced is always very simplistic in terms of shapes and design, however, it is the use of colour which makes the impression, which is what I like most about this designer.
I particularly like the depth of field of this design as it leads the eye to get lost within the design.

This skirt is very simplistic in terms of the cut of the garment, however, it is the print which is very pleasing on the eye. The use of colour is very vibrant and pleasing on the eye. Again, the garment is very much focused on colour as opposed to the manipulation of the fabric.

Introduction to fashion...

Fashion is a very valuable market and allows individuals to create their own style and make impressions through the clothes in which they wear.

The fashion market is a fast growing market and has different sections of classification. Top designer brands where clothes are made to a very high standard and quite unique to standard clothing are often aimed to the higher class or to the working class with intention to 'splash out' on an outfit. The clothing items on this market are very different to the typical everyday clothing shops found in most shopping malls where clothing is very standard and much the same.

Marimekko

 After looking at the Marimekko website, I love the vibrant colours which appear on some of the pattern designs from this company. The designs often have quite simplistic designs with not a lot of intricate detailing. On the other hand, all designs express colour very well with the use of complimentary colours, as well as contrasting colours. They create the feel of 60s designs with a modern twist. I have chosen to display these designs on my blog because I think that the use of colour will help to inspire me, however, I like to create quite detailed designs so the simplistic approach doesn't appeal to me as much.

Interior journal research

 

 

The photocopies above are all from Issue 34 and Issue 35 of the journal 'Mix'. The interiors within these journals showed pattern which is and will be typical of interiors now and in the future. Typical features seem to be very simplistic patters and prints, but the colours are very contrasting or bright and the eye gets lost within the design. 

Top end interior video

I found a video of a top end interior house whereby all interiors are made to a very high quality. Although the designs are very plain and simplistic, very warm colours are used to help build a homely feel to the very well constructed interiors.
